# 15 - May you hold your stories lightly

We all have stories about who we are and what we're not.
But remember: Our stories are made up by our minds.
They're our mind's attempts to make sense of our life experiences. They are interpretations of what happened to us, not archives of what actually happened. This means our stories can be changed.
If we hold onto our stories *tightly*, we get trapped in the stories because of an expectation, maybe even an obligation, that we have to "stick to the script". That's what makes it harder for us to adapt to new circumstances.
However, if we hold our stories *lightly*, it becomes easier to see that the story just needs a bit of editing.
For example, if part of your story is "you are someone who never gives up" and you used to be healthy and now you're not, it can be tempting to keep doing what you "normally" do, pushing yourself beyond your capacity.
But even living with a chronic health condition, you can still be the one who never gives up. The plot twist in your story just means that you might have to _stop_ pushing yourself too far in order to show your determination.
So, what parts of *your* story need to be edited?
