> [!waypoints] [[31 Wishes List]] # May you hold your stories lightly Published: 15 May 2025 Updated: 9 May 2026 Tags: #mindset, #reframe We all have stories about who we are and what we're not. But remember: Our stories are made up by our minds. They're our mind's attempts to make sense of our life experiences. They are interpretations of what happened to us, not archives of what actually happened. This means our stories can be changed. If we hold onto our stories *tightly*, we get trapped in the stories because of an expectation, maybe even an obligation, that we have to "stick to the script". That's what makes it harder for us to adapt to new circumstances. However, if we hold our stories *lightly*, it becomes easier to see that the story just needs a bit of editing. For example, a part of someone's story could be: "I never give up". If they used to be fit and now they're not, they could be tempted to insist on doing what they "normally" do, even though that could beyond their current capacity. But even when living with a chronic health condition, they can still be the one who never gives up. The plot twist that COVID put into their story means that they might have to *stop* pushing themselves too far in order to show their determination. So, what parts of *your* story need to be edited and updated?
